FRIDAY 01-26-96![]()
| 0000 | "BERGEN POINT" reported
no noticeable change in stbd list, freeboard aft stbd virtually zero [decks awash from high tide and gentle swells]. |
|||
| 0200 | Pumping hard forward, freeboard aft was increasing as tide fell | |||
| 0300 | Salvors called off the refloat attempt. | |||
| 0300 | "BERGEN POINT" ordered
into barge's notch, asked if she could lift compressors onto barge for continued refloat on the next rising tide. |
|||
| 0310 | "BERGEN POINT" departed scene for Galillee. | |||
| 0430 | "ATLANTIC SALVOUR" was on scene. | |||
| 0610 | OMC had computed the air delivery volume versus time as : | |||
| Total volume to feed = 328,237 ft^3 | ||||
| Total CFM required = 1,155 CFM [cubic feet per minute] | ||||
| At 50% efficiency time to refloat on air ONLY | = 9.5 hrs | |||
| Combination of dewatering #1s+#2s+#7s and blow down, time to refloat | = 2.50 hrs | |||
| 0700 | Crews back on scene | |||
| "NORTH
CAPE" eased off the beach. Actual refloat time was 2.25 hrs compared to the 2.50 hrs predicted by Ocean Motions |
||||
| 1100 | NORTH CAPE was
"moored" several hundred yards out from her one week resting place. Diver started real-time videographic survey of bottom damage Multiple cracks, holes 10ft x 8" wide, inverted bilge plate [5/8"] in way of 4P, several dished areas, longitudinals had tripped [steel angles had fallen over some 45 degrees] |
|||
| 1530 | US Navy gave permission to dock the NORTH CAPE at the NETC wharf in Newport. | |||
| 1800 | USCG requested new computer runs
giving tank pressures and ullages that would make the barge suitable for tow to New York with stipulation that stresses along deck were tensile. |
|||
SATURDAY 01-27-96
| 0400 | OMC finished case "Prepare for tow to New
York", for stillwater and 15ft ocean swells Reason for 15 ft swells was we were not sure if barge was going out to be scuttled, or transiting to New York via the seaward side of Long Island. Forecast for later Saturday was for a new storm coming up from the south, almost like the storm of a week earlier, Fri 01-19-96 |
| 1125 | USCG's Lt John Nadeau approved OMC's loading condition drafts, trim, stability and stresses for the tow back to NY. |
TUESDAY 01-30-96
NORTH CAPE departed Newport RI for her home
port of New York floating on her cushion of air.
